1714 True Colors
[TNC Jazz CD 1714]
by Professional Reviews Date Added: Jan 09, 2005
…The tunes Eugene has composed for True Colors are the CD's main attraction. He has a lot to say as a composer, and he says it with a mature sense of melody and a willingness to move his harmonies far enough to the left to please the contemporary ear.
Listening to this CD as background music while reading your mail won't do it justice, for it is full of subtle ideas and excellent solos. Speaking of solos, Rusty Blevins is the perfect choice for interpreting these tunes. If the main idea of improvisation is to create melodies, Russ has the ideas, technique and sound to create them with; his music is a pleasure to listen to.
One of the eleven tunes that stands out is "Rainbow," which features solos by Stefan [Karlsson] and Rusty plus one of Eugene's best guitar solos (think Pat Metheny) and a collective improvisation at the end. "1114 on 6857" (the title suggests two addresses, or it may even be a coded message to jazz activists) is an uptempo tune that works great with Stefan's perfect comping. Stefan's solo describes how the changes work without getting repetitious.
"Blue Sunday" is a gorgeous tune with sensitive guitar comping behind Rusty's lead line with a fitting ending… This CD does not sound like a freshman effort and is a good showcase for Eugene Shapiro's writing and playing skills.
