Dharma begins with the notion that the relationship between composition and improvisation is circular rather than linear; that each process inspires the other. Dharma furthers the sense that music is conversation; participants free to interject ideas, develop thoughts or move on as they wish to the next topic. Walter Blantons provocative compositions played in the free spirit of Ornette Coleman will entice the experienced listener and fascinate the newcomer.
"Blantons Dharma group effectively straddles freer inclinations with a firm appreciation for more mainstream traditions A healthy respect for ones elders is present from the beginning 'Blackwell Street Blues' The loose tune offers a framework for most of the band to improvise solos shaped along the lines of classical New Orleans polyphony.. The program as a whole is vigorous and creative and easily justifies Dharmas longevity as a working musical collective." Derek Taylor, Cadence
Dharma: Walter Blanton, trumpet; Roy James, drums; Phil Wigfall, saxophone; Kevin Thomas, bass; Stefan Karlsson, piano; Marc Solis, saxophone; Timothy Bonenfant, clarinet
