Janis McKay, principal bassoonist of the Las Vegas Philharmonic, has put together a remarkable collection of chamber pieces. Some, like the Tansman and Etler sonatas, are familiar staples of the bassoon repertory, but the others are relatively unknown. Ms McKay plays the Tansman with great enthusiasm and finesse, dramatically shifting the timbre to fit the music. She plays the forceful, articulated sections with a much brighter sound than in the smooth melodic sections. She also takes appropriate musical lifts and pauses and resists the urge to rush the cadenza between I and II. Pianist Mykola Suk puts in a strong performance, too.
